Notes: Nice pocket size miniature leather binding with half title page and gilt fore edge. She Stoops to Conquer is a comedy by the Irish author Oliver Goldsmith, first performed in 1773. The play is a great favourite for study by English literature classes in Britain. It is one of the few plays from the 18th century to have an enduring appeal, and is still regularly performed today. It has been adapted into a film several times, including in 1914 and 1923. Initially the play was titled 'Mistakes of the Night', indeed the events within the play happen during the very limited timeframe of one night. In essence, the play is a farce, based on multiple misunderstandings. In a blue cloth binding. Externally smart, with wear to the extremities. The inner hinges are strained but holding. There is some wear to the extremities including a stain to the top of the spine. Internally the book is generally clean and bright apart from the occasional spot. There is a handwritten inscription on the blank endpaper opposite the half title page dated 1914. Good.
