Darley (1822-1888), a well-known illustrator known for his works of famous authors of the 19th century, including Charles Dickens. NOT A TRADE EDITION, FACSIMILE, OR MORE RECENT REPRINT. Hint of offsetting, foxing at frontispiece. Pages are clean, readable. Illustrations are clear, vivid. Overall, extremely Very Good condition for an uncommon antiquarian novel. This wonderful story by James Fenimore Cooper was originally published in 1840. It's about Natty Bumppo, a wilderness scout, who comes to the aid of a British colonial garrison under attack. Bumppo loves Mabel Dunham, daughter of a sergeant; but she loves his friend, Jasper Western, who is believed to be a traitor. The true traitor, Lieutenant, Davy Muir, is eventually killed. An enduring story. Collectible. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991.
