Notes: xxi, 533pp, index, bibliography, appendices, hundreds bw & col ills. Or cloth in jacket. App 2" tear to front panel of jacket. Comprehensive account of the evolution of water craft on the American continents beginning with the Eskimos nearly 4000 years ago and concludes with the Antarctic whaling of the 1960s. The stress is on the period from 1492 to 1928, with chief emphasis on the transition from sail to steam in the middle of the 19th century. Many important corrections to erroneous maritime lore. Includes a detailed account of the 23 wooden naval steamers known collectively as the 90 day gunboats-the first numerous class of identical vessels in any navy. Also a re-evealuation of Bushnell's submarine, built early in the American Revolution, showing it to be one of the subtlest technological triumphs of the age, and one that failed only because it was misused. Fascinating reading and important historical detail.
