Notes: 3 volume set. Bound in publisher's tooled cloth. Early edition. Vol. 1 portrait detached. Early signature of William Jarvis. William Jarvis (1770-1859) was an American diplomat and noted merchant. He is best known for importing merino sheep into the US from Spain. Jarvis was appointed US consul in Portugal by Thomas Jefferson. Due to the disruption caused by Napoleon's Peninsular wars, Jarvis was able to purchase a flock of 4000 sheep and smuggle them out of Spain (with the active support of the US Govt), thus breaking Spain's monopoly on the sheep's wool.
