Overview -
The lives of squire's daughter Matilda Pedley and her maid, Rachel resume against the backdrop of a country agitating for Reform. Rachel is now happily settled with Jed Fairfax, and Matilda has finally rebuilt the debt-ridden estate her husband left. The debonair Harry Bennett, now an MP, still yearns for her, but Matilda resists all overtures.

As the next generation comes to the fore, Harry's daughters, Judith and Olivia meet Adam and Clare Pedley out riding.
