More About Christ the Mediator of the Law (Studies in Christian History and Thought) by Moon, Byung-Ho

Overview

This study seeks to give an account of the truth, scope, and validity of Calvin's Christological understanding of the law in the light of his concept of Christus mediator legis. It sets out the key points of the intellectual origins of Calvin's theology of the law, especially his study of law, Christ's mediation of the law in the Old and New Testaments, and the relationship between the duplex office and the triplex use of the law. A comparative study between Calvin and contemporary Reformers--Luther, Bucer, Melanchthon, and Bullinger--and Servetus is made in order to point up the unique feature of the coherence between Christology and soteriology in Calvin's theology of the law. ""With this very original study, Byung-Ho Moon makes an outstanding contribution to an important but overlooked aspect of Calvin's theology, viz, . the relation of Christ to the law of God. Highly recommended."" --I. John Hesselink, Albertus C. Van Raalte Professor of Theology Emeritus, Western Theological Seminary ""Even the law is mediated by Christ so that it came to be the rule of life-giving as well as the rule of living. The law being the rule of life-giving sounds a little strange, this could be because Christ gives life to the law, as Calvin explains. Thus Dr. Moon opens up a new frontier in Calvin studies."" --Chulwon Suh, Chongshin University, Seoul ""Calvin's emphasis on the law of God as a norm for Christian life has to be understood in the light of Christ's role as 'mediator of the law' from first to last. This is the important argument of this mature study of Calvin's wide-ranging writings. It is both a work of exacting Reformation scholarship and highly pertinent to contemporary efforts to vindicate the life-giving character of God's law."" --David F. Wright, Professor Emeritus, University of Edinburgh Byung-Ho Moon was born in Sangjoo, Korea. He studied at the College of Law at Korea University (Seoul, BS), Chongshin Theological Seminary (Seoul, MDiv), Calvin Theological Seminary (Grand Rapids, ThM study), Western Theological Seminary (Holland, ThM), Edinburgh University (PhD). He is currently lecturer at the Chongshin Theological Seminary.
