Overview

At the age of ten, Florence (Floddie) Lyon Merriam begins the first of a series of diaries documenting her enchanting childhood growing up in Lyons Falls, New York, a picturesque village at the base of the Adirondacks founded by her great-grandfather, Lyman Rasselas Lyon and first settled by his father, Caleb Lyon. Her paternal great-grandfather was New York State Congressman, Clinton Levi Merriam and her maternal great-grandfather was Benjamin Brandreth, creator of the famous Brandreth Pill. Although she is by no means a spoiled rich girl, Floddie's life is one of secluded privilege. Along with her two sisters and three cousins they spend most their days in the care of governesses at the family mansion called Florissante, the cousin's farm or exploring the beautiful woods in between. However, in the midst of all this, Floddie is aware of and comments on the events leading up to and during WWI.
